Air Products Launches European Project to Certify Renewable Hydrogen
The GOs are being sought for hydrogen produced at the Rotterdam chloralkaline electrolyser plants of Nouryon (formerly AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals), which uses wind power as part of its energy mix. This renewable power is sourced from the recently completed Krammer and Bouwdokken windfarms in The Netherlands. Once produced, the hydrogen is conditioned by Air Products before taking into its established pipeline in Rotterdam for commercial use.
As part of the pilot project, two of Air Products’ hydrogen customers in the mobility sector will receive GOs for renewable hydrogen. The first is H2 MOBLITY Deutschland, an organisation operating a network of hydrogen fuelling stations in Germany. The second is London’s integrated transport authority, Transport for London, which operates hydrogen buses across the United Kingdom’s capital.
The project is part of CertifHy, an initiative launching the first European-wide GO scheme for low carbon and renewable hydrogen. Transferable across the continent, GOs are intended to create an innovative, transparent hydrogen market. Air Products, the leading global supplier of hydrogen to refineries to assist in producing cleaner burning transportation fuels, has vast experience in the hydrogen fuelling industry.
Kurt Lefevere, Vice President Northern Continent at Air Products said: “To make a real contribution towards a clean, sustainable transportation system it is critical that members of the supply chain come together. We’re always looking for opportunities to achieve operational efficiency and help meet the carbon dioxide emission reduction targets of European Union countries in a cost-effective way. Having a European-wide Guarantees of Origin system for renewable hydrogen will support these goals, and our project with Nouryon is an innovative example of what can be achieved where circumstances permit.”
Marcel Galjee, Energy Director of Nouryon said: “CertifHy ‘green hydrogen’ can play an important role in transport and is also key in the transition to a sustainable chemical industry, where it is widely used as a raw material. This EU certification is an important first step to further develop the market for green hydrogen and provide the basis for the industry to take a leadership role in the transition.”
Nikolas Iwan, managing director at H2 MOBILITY Deutschland said: “The CertifHy ‘green hydrogen’ certificates from Air Products significantly increase the proportion of green hydrogen at our stations. We strongly believe that CertifHy will help to establish an innovative, transparent European market for renewable hydrogen.”
The CertifHy pilot program will initially run until mid-2019. It is funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCHJU), a partnership between the European Commission and the hydrogen industry and research community.
