  Walt Smith - e-business manager, global packaged gases.
 

Walt studied metallurgy at Holdsworth School of Applied Sciences at Leeds University and completed a post graduate programme at Cambridge University Engineering department where he studied Advanced Production Methods and Management.

Walt joined Air Products in 1973 in the applied research and development group (AR&D). After various managerial positions in the UK and South Africa, he was appointed project manager in the Metals group of AR&D. In the eighties, Walt held various marketing positions in the UK, mainly in the industrial gases division, for both bulk and cylinder gases.

 
 

The establishment of the UK headquarters at Basingstoke in 1991 gave Walt the opportunity to lead and develop the commercial strategy as the bulk and cylinder marketing manager. He became an active member of the senior management team.

In October 1992, Walt led the industrial cylinder marketing on a European basis, based in Brussels; and in 1996, he was appointed marketing director packaged gases Europe. In 1999, he was appointed packaged gases marketing manager, based in the company's worldwide headquarters in Allentown, PA.

In August 2001, Walt returned to the European headquarters of Air Products as e-business manager, global packaged gases responsible for the launch and development of APDirect and the deployment of e-business within packaged gases. In his new role Walt drives e-business strategy on a global basis for packaged gases in conjunction with the e-business group based in Allentown and Hersham. He is responsible for concept development and prioritisation of e-business applications delivering real value to existing and prospective customers both in terms of mainstream applications and next generation technology.
