Air Products Clean Up

Esher grounds get a makeover from Air Products Employees

27th June, 2007 — Environmental concern is a hot topic particularly on a local level where there is a desire to protect and maintain our green spaces. It is for this reason a group of Air Products’ engineers and Elmbridge Borough Council are carrying out conservation work at The Ledges, West End Common, Esher on Thursday, 5th July.

The Countryside within Elmbridge is an important way for its residents to experience nature in our progressively urban world. They play an important role in biodiversity and can help to avert floods by soaking up storm water.

The engineers will be diligently tidying the grounds as well as installing a new oak bench, so people can spend more time enjoying the environment. They will also be removing ‘Himalayan Balsam,’ an annual plant with the potential to take over vast areas of woodland very quickly and controlling other species such as Rhodoendron.

Elmbridge Borough Council, who are co-ordinating the engineers will be providing the team with guidance, direction and encouragement throughout the day.

Dave Page, Countryside Estates Officer at Elmbridge Borough Council commented:

“We rely on volunteers for much of the work we do. The countryside in this area is a great asset and to maintain it takes a lot of work. We are very impressed with Air Products proactive approach and welcome any other volunteers who want to help.”

Katie Higgins, who works in Engineering Design at Air Products has been the driving force behind Air Products’ involvement, she said: “Volunteering for worthwhile opportunities such as this means that we are able to make a difference to something we’ll be able to see the value of on a daily basis.”

The engineers have volunteered their time to help maintain the environment where their European Headquarters has been – and will continue to be – based for over-25 years.
