SURFYNOL® MD20 MOLECULAR DEFOAMER – A NEW DEFOAMER FOR COATINGS, GRAPHIC ARTS AND ADHESIVES APPLICATIONS

16 January 2004 — response to demand for higher performing defoamers for new compliant water-based coating, ink and adhesive technologies, Air Products has introduced a new product based on Gemini surfactant technology: Surfynol® MD20 molecular defoamer.

Surfynol MD-20 molecular defoamer offers the ability to reduce the surface tension of water, enabling better wetting of surfaces. Its unique combination of foam control and dynamic wetting offers benefits for many types of water-based applications. In addition, Surfynol MD-20 molecular defoamer has the potential to reduce overall additive levels leading to simpler, more economic formulations.

Traditional defoamers rely on incompatibility to provide foam control, but this leads to difficulties of incorporation and surface defect formation. Molecular defoamers provide an answer to these problems.

Molecular defoamers based on Gemini surfactant technology are very surface active and break foam at a molecular level. They destroy ionic and other forces which can stabilise foam, causing the foam to collapse. These silicone-free molecular defoamers also offer long- term activity compared to systems which operate by incompatibility.

Foam produced during manufacturing, mixing or application, can be controlled by Surfynol MD20 Molecular Defoamer.

When used alone, or in combination with other surfactants, Surfynol MD-20 Molecular Defoamer is particularly effective at eliminating micro-foam and other foam related coating defects.

Surfynol MD-20 Molecular Defoamer finds use in: automotive OEM and refinish, wood coatings, industrial maintenance coatings and architectural coatings, as well as graphic arts and adhesives applications. Surfynol MD20 Molecular Defoamer has been shown to be particularly effective in water-based systems. The benefits to formulators include:

   Defect-free foam control
   Dynamic wetting
   Long-lasting defoamer activity
   Easy incorporation
   Synergism with wetting agents
   Micro-foam elimination
   Wide formulation latitude
   100% active, solvent-free clear liquid
   Non-silicone, non-hydrophobic silica based
   Temperature and pH stable
