NADINE CAN BREATHE-EASY WITH LIQUID OXYGEN - EVEN WHEN SHOPPING OR ON HOLIDAY

9th June 2003 — Just like most teenagers, 14-year-old Nadine Bowen likes nothing better than shopping and holidays at the seaside.

But that's where the similarities end, because Nadine needs a constant supply of oxygen - something she has needed since birth.

Time was when Nadine, who lives in Caerphilly with parents, Pearl and Gareth, sister Melissa (12) and Zac (nearly 3), would have been housebound. But she is one of a small and growing number of patients around the country who are benefiting from the innovative development of liquid oxygen and more portable lightweight canisters by Air Products Medical. This is available to her on the NHS.

Now, she can carry a more portable canister which can be refilled from a tank installed at home. Portability is especially important as Nadine needs to get about in an electric wheelchair whenever she goes out. Her parents have also had an extension added to their bungalow to make life more comfortable for Nadine and the rest of the family.

Nadine studies at home with the help of a home tutor, but when the books are closed and it's time for a break, it's shopping she enjoys most.

"She is a real shopaholic - clothes, make-up, CDs, videos - just like any teenage girl," said Mum.

"There is no question that she is a brave little girl, and the liquid oxygen has definitely improved her quality of life. She would be housebound without it. It's given her more freedom, and we just hope that when people hear about Nadine's situation it will help others suffering like her."

A few years ago Nadine was able to fly to Ibiza for a family holiday, and in August they are all going on a caravan holiday to Tenby.

"Nadine loves the sea air. It's wonderful for her," Pearl added.

Once again, the freedom to take a holiday is the result of the total oxygen service for holidaymakers provided by Air Products Medical. So, a lung condition and breathing difficulties should not be a barrier to enjoying a holiday - so long as your doctor gives the green light to your holiday plans.

Note for editors

The British Lung Foundation reckon there are about eight million people in the UK suffering from a lung condition - asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and lung cancer. Although not all these people will require oxygen, it does mean that about one person in every family is affected.

Air Products' holiday service enables a vast number of these patients to enjoy the kinds of activities that most of us take for granted. As well as operating in the UK, the company also operates on a regional basis throughout France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Belgium and Germany. But even if a patient wants to travel to an area where the company doesn't operate, Air Products will put them in touch with a local supplier to ensure that they continue to enjoy quality of life while on holiday.
