GC with Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS)

Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometer or GC-MS, otherwise known as a Mass Selective Detector, is becoming a widely used and powerful GC technique. It is used in many markets including environmental, forensics, law enforcement, food and beverage, oil and natural gas and can analyse to very low concentrations and provide additional molecular weight information.

The carrier gas choice when using GC-MS is critical as the mass spectrometer is very sensitive to Oxygen, Water and Hydrocarbon impurities. Damage to the MS as well as to the stationary phase in the gas chromatograph can cause significant problems such as high baseline noise and column bleed in the output gas chromatogram which both reduces the analyser sensitivity and decreases column lifetime.

The choice of carrier and for GC-MS-MS or Tandem MS is even more critical as it is even more sensitive to impurities. In both techniques, the routine calibration of the analyser using a calibration mixture is common.
