Comprehensive Gas Chromatography (GC X GC)

Comprehensive Gas Chromatography or GC X GC is a technique used to aid analysis of complex samples such as gasoline/petroleum, environmental pollutants, perfume/fragrance, flavours, tobacco and arson samples (debris) from fires which cannot be analysed by normal GCs. It involves the use of two or more different columns in series. As a peak exits the first column, the peak is effectively cut into small pieces and injected into the second column. This is achieved by rapidly cooling the end of the first column, typically by using very cold liquid Nitrogen or Carbon Dioxide, then rapidly heating it in short cycles.

For GC X GC, the carrier gas needs to have exceptionally low levels of Water and Oxygen and other key impurities since Water and Oxygen can interact with the stationary phase and cause problems such as high baseline noise and column bleed in the output gas chromatogram which both reduces the analyser sensitivity and decreases column lifetime.
