When used correctly oxygen is safe. But you do need to follow some basic safety advice:
Do not smoke!
Do not let anyone smoke near you!
Smoking will aggravate your condition and is dangerous when using oxygen. Materials burn more vigorously in oxygen than in air.
Keep away from naked flames!
All oxygen equipment should be kept well away from naked flames such as birthday candles, open fires and gas cookers. Contact your local fire brigade or visit www.firekills.gov.uk for more information about fire safety.
Keep away from heat!
Oxygen is not explosive but it will help fires to burn more fiercely. Ensure that your oxygen cylinders are kept away from fires, cookers and heaters etc. Recommended distance for oxygen therapy equipment: open fires 3m (10ft); closed fires 1.5m (5ft).

Turn it off!
Turn off the oxygen supply when not in use. When using your oxygen do not leave your mask or cannula in your lap or lying on the bed or chair for any length of time. Oxygen may be absorbed in the material and make it more
flammable.
Be aware!
Oxygen concentrators purify air from the surroundings. If you use it near heaters or fires, fumes in the air may not be completely removed. Recommended distance: open fires 3m (10ft); closed fires 1.5m (5ft).
Just in case!
Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher at home and install a smoke detector. We inform the Fire Service that you use oxygen in your home.
You should also tell your local brigade what equipment you have and where
you store it.

Do not oil!
Never use oil or grease to lubricate oxygen valves or taps. Never use Vaseline or oil-based gels or creams on your skin.
If your equipment requires attention, please call 0800 373580.
Keep tubing free!
Make sure tubing does not become trapped as this will restrict the flow of oxygen. Particular care should be taken with doors, cot frames and high chairs for infants. Be aware that loose tubing may also cause trips and falls.
Never adjust the flow rate!
Your flow rate is prescribed by your doctor according to your particular condition and needs. Never adjust your flow rate without first consulting a medical professional.
Power cuts
In the event of power supply problems your oxygen concentrator will not function. You should use your back-up oxygen cylinder until power resumes. Call us for a replacement as soon as you start this.
