Going on holiday in Scotland and Northern Ireland

It is possible to travel and go on holiday while dependent on oxygen.

However, it is beneficial to try to plan a trip at least 2-4 weeks in advance and always seek medical advice before you book and travel on holiday. Take details of your ‘home oxygen order’ with you and any accessories you may need.

If you are travelling on holiday in Scotland & Northern Ireland, the oxygen service is free of charge. There are five easy steps for you to follow when going on holiday:

Step 1
Obtain permission for your holiday oxygen equipment to be delivered and stored at your holiday accommodation.

Step 2
Contact your General Practitioner (GP) or specialist team as soon as possible before you travel on holiday.

Step 2a (Scotland & Northern Ireland)

  • Cylinders – Your GP can complete a HOOF for your holiday oxygen requirements and we will make arrangements with the local provider. Alternatively, your GP will give you a prescription for use in a pharmacy in your holiday destination.
  • Concentrators – If you are going on holiday to Scotland your GP can complete a HOOF and we will make arrangements with the local provider. If you are travelling on holiday to Northern Ireland, your GP will give you a prescription and you contact the provider direct.

Step 3
Your holiday equipment will be ready for you when you arrive. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, you need to collect your holiday cylinders from a local pharmacy and return them when you leave.

Step 4
As the holiday service is free of charge there is no need to pay.

Step 5
Enjoy your holiday!
