Tracheotomy masks
Tracheotomy masks have been designed for patients who have a tracheotomy (meaning they have to breathe through a hole in their throat rather than through their nose/mouth). If you need a tracheotomy mask, it needs to be prescribed by a GP or respiratory specialist.
Non re-breathe / re-breathe masks
These types of mask have a rubber flap on one side which allows air to be taken in along with pure oxygen when you inhale. When you exhale the carbon dioxide escapes through the open vent and through the rubber flap opening. Patients using re-breathe masks do re-breathe air from around the mask.
High concentration non re-breathe masks
High concentration non re-breathe masks have rubber flaps on both sides, which prevent any air mixing with the oxygen when you inhale. The rubber flaps close around the vents preventing this from happening.
Note:
These masks are only for use by cluster headache patients.
Medium concentration non re-breathe masks
This type of mask is only available on the request of a clinician/respiratory specialist via a home oxygen order form (HOOF).
Adult high flow cannula
Adult high flow cannulae are prescribed to give high flow rates and are used to deliver flow rates from 5 litres per minute up to 8 litres per minute.
These cannulae have 2.1m tubing attached to eliminate the noise of the oxygen flow, provide an uninterrupted flow of oxygen and allow maximum safety with its anti-crush resistant tubing.
Adult 1600 high flow cannulae
These cannulae cover flow rates of 10 litres per minute up to 15 litres per minute. They are designed for patients on a high flow rate who wear a mask 24 hours a day and must have their oxygen whilst eating, drinking, taking medication and nebuliser treatments.
Note
This cannula must not be used for long periods of time as the high pressure of the oxygen can damage the nose.
Humidifiers
We provide two types of humidifiers: one for flow rates 0 litres to 4 litres per minute - this type is distinguished by a black top. The other humidifier has a white top and is used with flow rates 5 litres per minute to 15 litres per minute.
Humidifiers can only be used on concentrators, not cylinders. Humidifiers are filled with purified/distilled water; this needs to be changed every day to prevent infection.
The humidifier has to be below the patient at all times to help prevent water leaking into the tubing.
