Nitrogen is a commonly occurring gas that makes up approximately 78% of the Earth’s atmosphere. Discovered by Scottish physician, Daniel Rutherford in 1772, it is an unreactive, diatomic gas. Due to the inert properties of nitrogen it is used in many industrial applications such as electronic chip manufacture, stainless steel production, tyre inflation and food freezing and preserving (modified atmosphere packaging). There are also more specialist uses of nitrogen gas for surgery and laboratory work.
