Energy Surcharge
The recent increases in electricity and gas charges have been well documented in the media and through the announcements made by utility suppliers over recent months. The impact of environmental legislation such as the large combustion plant directive and phase 2 of the European Trading Scheme are contributing to higher energy costs affecting businesses and consumers alike, likewise, with lower than expected LNG utilisation rates and nuclear power outages, electricity prices for the summer 2008 are holding firm at a level higher than winter 07 rates, and almost double the spot levels seen in summer 2007.
This is an unprecedented increase and is driven by a number of factors including coal, which accounts for approximately 40% of the UK's power generation and the pricing of which has also almost doubled in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, diesel costs are rising as a direct result of the oil price and additional increases to Government levied duties; as a result they are predicted to be 30%-40% above January 2007 levels by the end of the 2008.
