Schools Project

The Air Products Science and Engineer Ambassador Demonstration Program has been amazing kids and adults alike since the 1970s. It is offered free of charge to local schools, scout troops, community groups and non-profit organisations.

The demonstrations are carried out by Air Products employees who volunteer their time to help groups learn about the magic of science and promote careers in engineering.

The demonstrations consist of visual demonstrations and experiments which capture fundamental lessons, and make them unforgettable. Students watch as items such as flowers are frozen with LIN (liquid nitrogen) and then crumbled and broken. Balloons are deflated by being put into a dewar of LIN, and then are warmed back up and re-inflated right before the audience's eyes. Some of our Ambassadors even make LINcream – a delicious form of ice cream made with LIN and traditional ice cream ingredients. Most agree that LINcream is the freshest ice cream they have ever tasted!

Recent projects:

Working with SETPOINT Surrey - part of the SETNET national network, supported by the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department for Education and Skills (DFES) - we train and check (by the criminal record bureau) our Ambassadors across the UK. This means we are able to reach hundreds of school children of many different ages, every year.

These include schools in Wilton (Middlesbrough), Hersham (Surrey), Basingstoke (Hampshire) and Crewe (Cheshire).

Our Ambassadors are also involved with a number of other organisations aimed at promoting Science and Engineering. For example, The Surrey Education Business Partnership (SEBP) arrange the ‘Future Town’ event, designed to raise students’ awareness of issues concerned with citizenship and the running of a town. Air Products’ Representatives contribute their knowledge about future energies and waste.
