Nitrogen foam inerting is a high-integrity safety technique
where hot work in the presence of hydrocarbon products is
required. Nitrogen foam provides gas in a stable, visible
form and has been used extensively on pipelines, tanks and
process vessels for many years, during maintenance and
shutdown periods.
Foam Inerting Process
Gaseous nitrogen is converted to a high-expansion foam
and, maintained under positive pressure conditions, ensures
essential levels of safety during a hot cutting procedure.
This method provides:
- positive displacement of flammable vapours from within
process vessels or pipework;
- visual indication of the inerting medium;
- rapid replacement of the foam destroyed by the heat of
the cutting procedure.

For maximum safety, we use a specially formulated
nitrogen-based foam that is injected into the vessel and the
rate of foam generation is closely controlled to match the
speed at which the hot work is being performed. This
technique is well established, has an unparalleled safety
record and enables hot work in circumstances which would
otherwise be impossible.
